For those curious YES it smelled, however I came during the day and the stinkiest hours are very short lived. It releases a big stench all at once so it can attract as many beetles as possible from miles around, it only has about 24 hrs to finish all of its reproductive needs for the next 7-10 years.

I wish I could describe the feeling that washed over it when I got close and was allowed to touch its (very labial) petals, I felt an overwhelming desire to help pollinate the flower ! I am a big flower lover & in some ways I could consider myself an eco sexual but this is the first time I’ve felt compelled in such a visceral way to help pollinate a flower.

In 2021 my dream came true, I was invited to view a corpse flower that was part of a private collection! It was so beautiful in person, I can’t describe it and the pictures hardly do it justice.

Storytime! In 2019 I attended the public viewing of the corpse flower bloom at the SF Conservatory of Flowers. It was so beautiful but I wish I had been able to get closer.

In the years since I planted lots of poppies in my yard so hopefully someday I have my own private field and I can explore without cars rushing by!

I am still angling to recreate these photos with better conditions and better lighting but I still haven’t figured out what I want to do.

We shot at high noon, which in retrospect maybe wasn’t the best idea as it was terribly bright and I found it difficult to pose & use my face as the sun was painful! The grass was surprisingly uncomfortable too! I did the best I could and I think the pictures came out pretty good.

My roommate helped me as these photos needed to be taken from a very high angle and very quickly! The road this was near was very busy, even with reduced traffic due to lockdown.

I always had plans to lay down in the grass and get a picture and in March 2020 I did! This was 5 days into lockdown and it felt incredibly subversive and naughty to put on my silly down jacket over my lingerie, cross the street, remove my jacket and lay down in the grass.

If you live in Oakland you know that one of the best places to spot poppies within the city is in the medians of the road. A median near my old place had a glorious display and the city typically mowed it down end of March as it supposedly obstructed the view on the road. It was terribly sad as the poppies are lovely, but at least they popped back up every year.
